Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) Explained
AFIP is a regular tax-free payment for veterans seriously injured as a result of service. It covers the extra costs that come with living with a disability.
It's paid at the same rate as the enhanced daily living and mobility components of PIP combined, and it isn't means-tested, so your income and savings make no difference to it.
The part that matters most to people is that there's no assessment and no reassessment. Once you're entitled, you stay entitled for as long as you hold that level of Guaranteed Income Payment.
Who is eligible?
You need to have been injured on or after 6 April 2005 and to hold an Armed Forces Compensation Scheme Guaranteed Income Payment in Band A to C. It's the GIP band that decides it, not a percentage.
Some veterans also qualify through a War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement, so it's worth checking with Veterans UK if that applies to you.
You don't usually need to chase this one. Veterans UK issues a claim form automatically to people whose GIP falls in the right band, so get in touch if you think you qualify and nothing has arrived.
What benefits does this provide?
Paid at the highest PIP rates, with no assessment: GOV.UK sets AFIP at the same rate as the combined enhanced daily living and mobility components of PIP — on current rates £114.60 plus £80, so £194.60 a week — without you being assessed or reassessed for either.
The claim form comes to you: Veterans UK automatically issues one to anyone with a Guaranteed Income Payment in Band A to C.
Financial Support: AFIP provides a regular, tax-free payment to help cover the extra costs associated with long-term health conditions or disabilities resulting from military service.
Eligibility: Available to service leavers and veterans who have been seriously injured or disabled due to their service, ensuring they receive the necessary financial assistance.
No assessments: Unlike other disability benefits, AFIP carries no assessment and no periodic reviews. Once you are entitled, you stay entitled.
Compatibility with Other Benefits: AFIP can be received alongside other benefits, such as Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance, without affecting the amount received from these programmes.
Independence: The payment supports greater independence for veterans, enabling them to manage their daily living needs and improve their quality of life.
Direct Payment: Funds are paid directly into the recipient's bank account, ensuring easy and convenient access to the financial support provided.
