Service Family Accommodation (SFA) Explained

SFA is housing provided by the MoD for serving personnel and their families, usually near a base, ranging from flats to houses depending on family size.

What matters most on the way out is that entitlement ends on discharge. If you haven't moved out by then your accommodation charges go up, so the move needs planning before your last day rather than after it.

The Joint Service Housing Advice Office is the MoD's civilian housing advice service for people leaving, and it's worth contacting early — well before your discharge date, while you still have options.

If you're buying, Forces Help to Buy is an entitlement you use while still serving, so that timing matters too.

Who is eligible?

Serving personnel who are married, in a civil partnership, or single with dependents. Allocation depends on rank, family size and what's actually available.

Once you're discharged, you're not entitled to it. There's no veteran version of SFA.

That's the reason to start the housing conversation early. JSHAO can talk through renting, buying, social housing and the MoD referral scheme while you're still in, which is a much better position to plan from than after your entitlement has ended.

How do I apply?

• Eligibility Check: Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for Service Family Accommodation (SFA), which typically includes being a serving member of the UK Armed Forces with at least six months of service remaining.
• Register on the Online Portal: Access the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) website and register on the e-1132 online application system.
• Complete the Application: Fill out the e-1132 form with your personal details, service information, and family requirements.
• Submit Supporting Documents: Provide necessary documents such as marriage or civil partnership certificates and birth certificates for dependents.
• Await Allocation: Once your application is processed, you will receive an offer of accommodation based on availability and your entitlement.
• Accept the Offer: Review the offer details and accept it within the specified timeframe to secure your accommodation.
• Move-In Arrangements: Coordinate with the housing office for move-in dates and any additional requirements.
