X-Factor Adjustment on Pension Explained
X-Factor is an addition to your salary that compensates for the conditions of service life compared with a civilian job — unsociable hours, danger, frequent moves, and the effect on family life. It's averaged across a whole career and all three services.
The current rate is 14.5% for Regulars, Full Time Reserve Service on Full Commitment, and Mobilised Volunteer Reserves. It's 11.5% for Full Time Regular Restricted Separation, 5% for Part Time Volunteer Reserves and some other categories, and 0% for FTRS on Home Commitment.
It matters for your pension because it's pensionable. X-Factor feeds into the pensionable pay your benefits are built on, so it raises the pension you accrue and not just the money you take home.
The rate is recommended by the Armed Forces' Pay Review Body and looked at periodically, so it can move.
Who is eligible?
Everyone serving, at the rate that matches their commitment. You don't apply for it — it's built into your pay.
Full rates are paid to all Other Ranks and to officers up to OF4, which is Commander, Lieutenant Colonel or Wing Commander. Above that it tapers.
Because it's part of pensionable pay rather than a separate payment, it's already reflected in your pension forecast. If you want to see what it's worth to you, that forecast is the place to look.
